Project Description

Oyster 49 – 2002

Kaizen is a Solent rigged Oyster 49.  The Oyster brand is well known across the sailing community as being the ultimate choice of blue water yacht. The quality of craftmanship is unparalleled both in terms of the strength of the build and the quality of the decor.

Kaizen has had three owners since launch. She has a simple rig with in-mast furling to the mainsail, and double headsails, a working genoa on the inner forestay and a larger “off the wind” genoa on the outer one, providing a versatile and easily handled sailplan. Lovely teak interior joinery gives a luxurious feel below decks, where she sleeps six in three cabins. Fully specified and
equipped with an extensive set of spares for bluewater cruising.

Kaizen was built to the very highest standard – launched fully optioned as Oyster’s 2003 London Boat Show yacht. As such, she has an original specification that many yachts of her size built today would envy. This includes, 32,000 BTU of air conditioning, diesel central heating, 100l/hr water maker and a high output generator.

Purchased her in 2017 by her current owners, Kaizen was upgraded to meet the exacting requirements of her owner family of two adults and two small children.  This includes a complete structural refit at the yard where she was originally commissioned. Every element was reviewed, and decisions made on whether to upgrade, renew or maintain.

The only way to get the measure of this exceptional yacht is to study the full inventory – available on request.

MANUFACTURERS COMMENTS
Building upon his experience with his earlier Oyster 56 and 53 designs, Rob Humphreys was given a straightforward design brief “to draw a yacht of just under fifty feet with three cabins, whilst offering outstanding performance and a generous load carrying capacity for blue water cruising.”
Compared to the Holman and Pye designed 485 which she replaced, the 49 is a much ‘bigger’ yacht, with greatly enhanced interior volume, a longer waterline, increased sail area and displacement, all of which combine to give great confidence in all sea and weather conditions. Oyster launched fifteen examples between 2001 and 2007, so the 49 remains a rarity on the brokerage market. Nonetheless she is an excellent proposition for those whose cruising areas are better suited to a yacht of less than fifty feet, or those who prefer the simpler handling and lower maintenance costs of this size of yacht.
