Learn to Sail in Tahiti

Spend seven days sailing between Tahiti, the Tetiaroa atoll and Moorea and earn three ASA certifications — in one of the most beautiful cruising grounds on Earth.

Some sailing courses happen in a classroom. This one happens in one of the most beautiful cruising grounds on Earth.

From November 14 to 20, 2026, spend seven days living aboard a performance cruising catamaran in French Polynesia and earn three American Sailing Association (ASA) certifications in a single course. You’ll sail offshore between Tahiti, the Tetiaroa atoll and Moorea — and come home a more confident, more capable skipper.

Three certifications, one unforgettable week

This combined course is designed for sailors who want the knowledge and the hands-on experience to skipper a catamaran on multi-day coastal and offshore passages. Over the week you’ll complete:

  • ASA 103 — Coastal Cruising: sailing an auxiliary-powered cruising boat in coastal conditions.
  • ASA 104 — Bareboat Cruising: provisioning, boat systems, anchoring and skippering on a multi-day cruise.
  • ASA 114 — Cruising Catamaran: the handling, performance and seamanship specific to multihulls.

You’ll learn provisioning and galley operations, boat and auxiliary-engine systems, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation and chart work, docking, health and safety, emergency procedures, weather interpretation and tender operation — everything you need to take the helm with confidence. By the end of the week the manoeuvres that felt daunting on day one will feel like second nature.

A week of real cruising, not just a syllabus

Learning to sail at the helm of a catamaran in Tahiti
Hands-on at the helm — small groups keep you sailing all week.

What makes this course different is that you don’t just study cruising — you live it. You’ll make landfall on a coral atoll, anchor beneath Moorea’s peaks, snorkel over the reef, and learn to read and safely enter a pass. Alongside the classic ASA curriculum, you’ll experience the real rhythm of island cruising life, with all of its beauty and its challenges. With small groups of 3 to 6 sailors, you’re always hands-on at the helm rather than watching from the rail.

Your route through paradise

A sample itinerary — the real route always flexes with the wind and the sea:

  • Day 1 — Papeete → Matavai Bay: a refresher sail and first anchorage below Venus Point.
  • Day 2 — Tahiti → Tetiaroa: a 30-mile passage to a coral atoll with no pass; mooring in deep water over the reef shelf.
  • Day 3 — Tetiaroa discovery: bird island, the flora and fauna of the atoll, snorkelling and water sports.
  • Day 4 — Tetiaroa → Cook’s Bay, Moorea: downwind sailing, channel entry and anchoring.
  • Day 5 — Cook’s Bay → Opunohu: light-air sailing, a sunken tiki garden and the ancestors’ trail.
  • Day 6 — Opunohu → Haapiti: a channel crossing and a sand anchorage among the coral heads.
  • Day 7 — Moorea → Papeete: the crossing back into stronger winds, a pass entry and a return to harbour.
